NINE YEARS WAR : BATTLE OF KINSALE

The, origins of the Nine Years War can be  traced back to when Hugh O' Neill, Earl of Tyrone and Hugh O' Donnell, Lord of Tyrconnell, rebelled against Queen Elizabeth I. By 1601, the English were increasing pressure in the Ulstermen who sought support from Spsin. In Sertember 1601, a Spanish force landed in Kinsale where they awaited the arrival of their Ulster allies. By 23 December 1601, the united Irish force was camped only a few miles north of Kinsale where the Spanish had successfully repelled several English attacks. On Christmas Eve, over 5,000 Irishmen advanced on Kinsale. The battle was one of the most decisive defeats in Irish history.
